What is Outset?

Outset (joinoutset.com) is a pre-college academic camp hosted at leading colleges and universities for teens interested in healthcare and medical careers. Outset is designed to help high school students explore what it takes to find success in a career in medicine.

Requirements:

• Strong preference for rising juniors, rising seniors, and recent grads
• Willingness to adapt to a fast-paced camp environment with changing schedules.
• High energy and enthusiasm to keep students engaged in both academic and fun activities.
• We prefer counselors with prior summer camp experience, but this is not required
• Ability to live on-site and work long hours typical of residential summer camps.
• If you are on a pre-med or pre-health track this is a bonus, but not required
• 3.0 GPA or higher
• Please Note: if you need to take summer courses this role is likely not a good fit.

Location & Dates

This camp is at UNC-Chapel Hill and is expected to run for 7-weeks with students. In addition, we will have approximately 5 days of staff training before camp. Expected dates are from June 1 - July 27.

Responsibilities:

Camp counselors are responsible for the 24/7 supervision and care of students, including wake-up routines, lights-out, and meal times. You will lead and participate in recreational activities, provide support in academic classrooms, and foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging camp environment. Counselors are expected to build positive, mentor-focused relationships with students, support conflict resolution and community building, and serve as role models for professionalism and teamwork. Additional responsibilities include monitoring student well-being, enforcing safety protocols, assisting with administrative tasks such as attendance and reporting, and maintaining clear communication with camp leadership to ensure each student’s academic and personal success. Our camps run each week from Sundays at 1:00pm to Fridays at 5:00pm. There is minimal downtime for you while camp is running. You will have a few hours off during the week, but in general this is a 24/7 role!

Compensation:

• This role pays $500 per week with the opportunity to earn up to a $250 performance bonus.
• Housing is provided (a shared dorm room with another counselor of the same gender)
• Meals are provided during camp - over the weekend you will have a $50 meal stipend
