Motor Equipment Operator I

The City of Virginia Beach is hiring a Motor Equipment Operator I with our Public Works Bridge Maintenance division.

This position requires a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver's license eligibility requirements and a Commercial Driver's License - Class B (VA or NC).

Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus.

The Motor Equipment Operator I will perform the following duties:

• Assist with installing guardrails, handrails and performs miscellaneous carpentry work to provide adequate safety structures.
• Performs sand blasting and chipping to prepare surface areas for maintenance and painting.
• Operates equipment to carry materials between work sites.
• Assist with pouring concrete, filling pavement cracks with asphalt and bituminous concrete on bridge surfaces to make adequate repairs.
• Assists in the repair or replacement of damaged structural components including decking, expansion plates, retaining wall, railing, beams, and footings to increase life of the structure as well as maintain its safety.
• Operate a snowplow during snow events.
• Operate a dump truck and other light duty vehicles in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies, to and from repair jobs.
• Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.
• Operate backhoe.
• Operate light automotive and medium duty power mowers for the purpose of vegetative maintenance of public rights-of-way and other municipally owned properties.
• Operate weed eaters along with pole saws, chain saw.

Pre-employment physical is required.

Please Note: This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

*CDL Hiring Bonus The $4,000 CDL (Class A or B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.

• $1,000 with first paycheck
